A group of 25 members of the US Senate and Chamber, headed by Senator Patrick Leahy and Congressman Jim McGovern, urged the US government to certify to the political system of that country from preventing companies and special personnel from the world to collaborate with Cuba in the struggle of COVID-19. The letter sent to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, affirms that it is “dangerous and opposite to our long tradition of not politicizing the delivery of humanitarian aid. The letter also says that in an unprecedented emergency caused by a lethal virus that is so easily contagious, public health and security must be given priority. Quoted on Twitter by José Ramón Cabañas, Cuba's Ambassador to Washington, the document demands cooperation to eradicate the pandemic, given the geographical proximity between the two nations. The petition also refers to the contradiction that represents the economic, commercial and financial blockade, as well as the sanctions and threats against foreign companies interested in providing Cuba with necessary medical supplies. On numerous occasions, personalities of the US politics and government have raised their voices in support to the Cuban people.
