The Cuban scientific community in Camaguey held on Friday the Confluences Workshop on Climate Change, which was focused on Strategic actions to promote the subsistence of the human species.

Organized by the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians, the event had in its initial moment the conference on the implementation of the Life Task, a plan of the Cuban government, focused on the results of agriculture in the most extensive territory of Cuba with 16,000 kilometers squares.

One of the specialists of the Delegation of Agriculture in Camaguey, Maria Artuñedo, said that 'the challenges of the sector are focused on counteracting the effects of temperature increases, variations of rainy seasons, extreme events, soil erosion, and others that affect the production of crops.'

The implementation of measures to dull the salinization of soils, the alteration of pests and diseases, the affectations of species in the northern keys of the region, has a group of crucial actions, which includes a plan to eradicate polluting sources.

Monitoring studies in the 22 protected areas of the region also enter into the schedule and 'areas of impact are identified through diagnosis, especially the most affected after Hurricane Irma in 2017, and that today are experiencing reforestation actions,' Artuñedo stated.

The Cuban Government increases its funding for the cleaning of canals for water evacuation, the attention to drainages for the cultivation of cereals, in addition to the sustainable management of lands, including the planting of stronger variants in the face of climate change.
